What is CSR?

Welcome back!

Corporate social responsibility isn’t about planting trees in some vague corner of the world, but about how you do your business and how ethical you are as a corporation! Said Hurstel

It is not about “motivating” employees to contribute towards a social cause.

It should not be another way of creating customer loyalty, here based on noble activities.

It is not wearing the Green mask in whichever, whenever, wherever, whatever possible style to portray an ecofriendly(thereby socially responsible) image.

It is not about doing absolutely nothing to the community or society at large, but be good to employees.

It is not about finding a way to get into the good books of the tax man and manage some exemption.

It is not about starting an activity be it planting trees, or educating street children, but focusing on results and continuing the activity.

It is not jus’ about setting a recycling plant after realizing the irreparable damage already done.

It is not about doing an Enron and feed street children at the same time.

It is not about engaging sweat shops and cheap labor(oops Cost Arbitrage) and cost cutting, and being tight lipped on the bonded laborers (Think Adidas, Nike etc)

It is not about making the end customer pay unwillingly for an “activity” which is known for siphoning of public money and embezzlement.

It is not about roping in celebrities and hogging the media space with “We do this, this and this” statements. Celebrity endorsement, even for CSR?.

Then, what is CSR? Even I am trying to get an answer.

I guess its mainly “grand” jargon that corporates use to make an impact on the world at large…screaming ” We Care”…Do they really?? We all wonder!!

You write in a wonderful way. Like the words are right off the top of your head and bubbling to get out. I used to think it was a mallu thing but Im not sure. I wish I had that happy ability. :)

Call whatever they may, as long as it benefits someone in whatever small amt.

Its not about having a zillion lights lit up 24/7 either

Its not about blowing their own trumpet while allowing their elephant to take a leak on someone’s best linen

BUT… is it setting a good example (whtever that may be) for others to follow?

Nikhil,
The 7th sentence tht says abt recylying plant aftr damage has done has similarites abt whn actor kamal hassan b.came an aids activist recently.
Kamal quoted that he doesn’t need to see people dying of the disease or have a close member in his family/friends suffering from the disease, tht prompted him to take support this organization.
He is a grt actor and with all the hits of his movies makin money alone as donning multiple roles i.e actor, writer, director, producer etc.. He could have supported countless of organizations i.e these before.
Why now, i think its b/c of his choice to realize what this issue is primarely the disease itself regardless of how many people it affected.
Also, his fans are supporting other organizations i.e holding a blood donating camp on his b-day. He is on par w/common people in supporting these organizations and letting the healthcare professionals, health organizations speak for these stuff.
Meanwhile kamal remains to be silent on these issues b.c its not him that counts, but the people.

wow no other words fit it more appropriately. actually i was just surfing the site for completing my assignment,
but after reading ur interpretation i totally have got a new overview.
u have not spoken about CSR but eventhough u have explained it so well.
we keep on praising companies who have undertakan csr but the reality is they(in many cases)are just trying to save their faces.this has been an eye opener to an extent really

all the best for ur future

do write such things more often

it might be helpful for students like me
do reply

thanks

I think that we should understand that CSR is not a charity. Charity is a small part of CSR, unfortunately most of companies think that CSR is a charity.
I believe that CSR is about giving back to society appropriate with company ‘s core competence

Congrats and thanx nikhil 4 writing such a gud stuff.
What I feel that CSR is only a way of getting a competitive advantage over others. They do little and advertise enormously.
Where is the old concept of “neki kar dariya me daal” (means: do ur work without the expectation of reward or recognition).
